If your LG washer is flashing UE (sometimes shown as uE or U5), the drum is unbalanced — laundry has bunched to one side and the machine can’t spin safely. A quick rebalance clears it nine times out of ten.

Error code UE (also shown as uE or U5)
Meaning Unbalanced load
Severity Low — DIY in under 10 minutes
Time to fix 5–30 minutes
Tools needed None for rebalance; level if the machine tilts

What the UE error means

Before a spin cycle, your LG washer measures how evenly the drum is loaded by watching for wobble as it ramps up to speed. If one side holds noticeably more weight than the other, the sensor aborts and shows UE — spinning at full speed with an unbalanced drum damages the bearings and shakes the machine across the room. On some models the code appears as U5, which is just how the letter “E” renders on that particular display — same error, same fixes.

Common causes

  • Laundry bunched on one side of the drum (most common)
  • A single heavy item like a comforter, rug, or winter coat
  • Washer not level on the floor
  • Shipping bolts still fitted on a new installation
  • Worn suspension rods or shock absorbers

How to fix the UE error

  1. Pause and redistribute the load. Stop the cycle, open the door, and spread the laundry evenly around the drum. Untangle anything wrapped around the central post if you have a top-loader.
  2. Balance single items. If you’re washing one comforter or rug, add two or three towels to help the drum spin evenly.
  3. Check the washer is level. Put a level on top — if it rocks side-to-side or front-to-back, turn the adjustable feet until the machine sits flat and doesn’t move when pushed at the corners.
  4. Remove shipping bolts (new installs only). Four large bolts at the rear hold the drum still for transport. They must come out before first use or every spin triggers UE.
  5. If UE persists with an empty drum, the suspension rods or shocks are worn and the drum is bouncing during low-speed tests. This needs a technician or an experienced DIY job — rods run $40–$80 in parts.

FAQ

Why does my washer keep stopping on UE when I wash a comforter?
Large single items shift to one side during spin. Add two or three towels to balance the weight, or use the Bedding cycle which uses a lower spin speed.

Is UE different from uE or U5?
No — all three are the same unbalanced-load code. Lower-case uE means the washer is still trying to auto-rebalance. Upper-case UE means it’s given up and needs help. U5 is just the code on a display where the “E” renders to look like a “5”.

Can the UE error damage my washer?
Not the error itself — the machine aborts the spin to protect itself. But running with chronic imbalance (worn shocks, bad leveling) wears bearings and suspension faster over time.
